A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light. An angel appeared, showed a large rock in front of his cabin and asked him to push against the rock with all his might.
This the man did, day after day. For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock.
Nothing happened. And he decided to make it a matter of prayer.
“Lord I have labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time, I have not even been able to budge that rock. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”
The angel appeared again :
“My friend, I told you that your task was to push against the rock with all your strength. Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. And now you come to me with your strength spent, thinking that you have failed. But, is that really so?”
“Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown, your hands are callused from constant pressure, and your legs have become massive and hard.
“Through opposition you have grown much and your abilities now surpass that which you used to have.
“You learned the importance of discipline and training,
” This you have done. Now it is my turn, my task.”
And the angel moved the rock, showing to the man a beautiful path ahead.

SINCERE REPENTANCE
The monk Chu Lai was beaten by a teacher who did not believe anything he said. However, the professor’s wife was a follower of Chu Lai, and demanded that her husband had to apologize to him.
Displeased, but without the courage to deny his wife’s wishes, the man went to the temple with her and murmured some words of repentance.
“I do not forgive you,” replied Chu Lai, “go back to work.”
The woman was horrified. “My husband is humiliated, and you were not generous!”
And Chu Lai responded:
“Within my soul there is no rancor. But if he is not truly sorry, it is better for him to recognize now that he is mad at me. If I had accepted his apology, we would be creating a false state of harmony, and this would further increase the anger of your husband.”

ARREPENDIMENTO SINCERO
O monge Chu Lai era agredido por um professor, que não acreditava em nada do que ele dizia. Entretanto, a mulher do professor era seguidora de Chu Lai – e exigiu que seu marido fosse pedir desculpas ao sábio.
Contrariado, mas sem coragem de contrariar a mulher, o homem foi até o templo e murmurou algumas palavras de arrependimento.
- Eu não o perdôo – disse Chu Lai. – Volte ao trabalho.
A mulher ficou horrorizada:
- Meu marido se humilhou, e o senhor – que se diz sábio – não foi generoso!
Respondeu Chu Lai:
- Dentro de minha alma não existe nenhum rancor. Mas, se ele não está arrependido, é melhor reconhecer que tem raiva de mim. Se eu tivesse aceito seu perdão, íamos estar criando uma falsa situação de harmonia – e isto aumentaria ainda mais a raiva de seu marido.

Un profesor solía agredir al monje Chu Lai, pues no creía en nada de lo que éste decía. Sin embargo, la mujer del profesor era seguidora de Chu Lai, y le exigió a su marido que fuese a pedirle disculpas al sabio.
Disgustado, pero sin valor para contrariar a su mujer, el hombre se acercó hasta el templo y murmuró algunas palabras de arrepentimiento.
-Yo no te perdono – dijo Chu Lai – Vuelve a tu trabajo.
La mujer se quedó horrorizada.
-Mi marido se humilló, y usted, que se dice sabio, ¡no fue generoso!
Respondió Chu Lai:
-Dentro de mi alma no hay ningún rencor. Pero, si él no está arrepentido, es preferible que reconozca que me tiene rabia. Si yo hubiese aceptado su perdón, estaríamos creando una falsa situación de armonía, lo que aumentaría más aún la rabia de su marido.

Le moine Chu Lai était attaqué par un professeur, qui ne croyait pas à ce qu’il disait. Cependant, la femme du professeur était une adepte de Chu Lai – et elle exigea de son mari qu’il aille présenter des excuses au sage.
Contrarié, mais n’osant pas contrarier sa femme, l’homme se rendit au temple et murmura quelques mots de regret.
« Je ne vous pardonne pas, dit Chu Lai. Retournez au travail. »
La femme était horrifiée :
« Mon mari s’est humilié, et vous – qui vous prétendez sage – vous n’avez pas été généreux ! »
Chu Lai répondit :
« Dans mon âme, il n’y a aucune rancœur. Mais s’il n’a pas de regret, mieux vaut reconnaître qu’il est en colère contre moi. Si j’avais accepté son pardon, nous aurions créé une fausse situation d’harmonie – et cela augmenterait encore plus la colère de votre mari. »

Using the money he earned from peddling trishaw, Mr. Bai Fang Li has contributed to finance more than 300 poor students in their tuition fees and living expenses, helping them to complete their studies.
His daughter recalls “He suffers throughout his life, saving on food and drinks, stitching his torn pants over and over again. When you throw away his old pants and buy new ones for him, not only that he does not want to wear them but he also gets angry.”
When the elder peddles trishaw, his clothes, shoes and hates all do not match, as if he is a beggar.
“I had never bought any clothes before. You see, the clothes that I wear are all picked up from the clothes people threw away. Look at my shoes, they are different, even the socks inside are different! The same applies to my hat; it was also collected from dumpsites.” he said.
His family members who could not resist looking him like that have advised him but to no avail.
In response to that, he simply picked up a bun and said to his children
“What is so hard about this? This bun is the product of the farmers’ hard work. People throw it away; I pick it up and eat it; isn’t this a way to reduce wastage?”
It has been calculated that, over years, Mr. Bai Fang Li has peddled equivalent to going round the Earth’s equator for 18 (times?). Mr. Bai has never thought to be rewarded.
Somebody attempted to find the list of students sponsored by Mr. Bai but he only found a photograph of him with a few children, and that is the only photograph ever taken. When asked about what he expected of the children, his humble reply was “I only want them to study hard, get a good job, be a good person and to give back to the country.”
In 2001, Mr. Bai Fang Li donated the last sum of money. Nearly 90 years old, he was unable to peddle trishaws anymore.
Instead, he looked after people’s car at the station and saved up to 500 yuan before he donated the money.
After giving out his last sum of money, he said “I cannot work anymore, I can no longer donate money to others!” and that was the first time in her life his daughter Bai Jin Feng had ever heard her father saying that.
Mr. Bai passed away on September 23, 2005, in a hospital. Hundreds turned up at his funeral.

1] All human beings are different. And should do everything possible to continue to be so.
2] Each human being has been granted two courses of action: that of deed and that of contemplation. Both lead to the same place.
3] Each human being has been granted two qualities: power and gift. Power drives a person to meet his/her destiny, his gift obliges that person to share with others which is good in him/her. A human being must know when to use power, and when to use compassion.
4] Each human being has been granted a virtue: the capacity to choose. For he/she who does not use this virtue, it becomes a curse – and others will always choose for him/her.
5] Each human being has the right to two blessings, which are: the blessing to do right, and the blessing to err. In the latter case, there is always a path of learning leading to the right way.
6] Each human being has his own sexual profile, and should exercise it without guilt – provided he does not oblige others to exercise it with him/her.
7] Each human being has his own Personal Legend to be fulfilled, and this is the reason he is in the world. The Personal Legend is manifest in his enthusiasm for what she/he does.
Single paragraph – the Personal Legend may be abandoned for a certain time, provided one does not forget it and returns as soon as possible.
8] Each man has a feminine side, and each woman has a masculine side. It is necessary to use discipline with intuition, and to use intuition objectively.
9] Each human being must know two languages: the language of society and the language of the omens. The first serves for communication with others. The second serves to interpret messages from God.
10] Each human being has the right to seek out joy, joy being understood as something which makes one content – not necessarily that which makes others content.
11] Each human being must keep alight within him the sacred flame of madness. And must behave like a normal person.
12] The only faults considered grave are the following: not respecting the rights of one’s neighbor, letting oneself be paralyzed by fear, feeling guilty, thinking one does not deserve the good and bad which occurs in life, and being a coward.
Paragraph 1 – we shall love our adversaries, but not make alliances with them. They are placed in our way to test our sword, and deserve the respect of our fight.
Paragraph 2 – we shall choose our adversaries, not the other way around.
12A] We hereby declare the end to the wall dividing the sacred from the profane: from now on, all is sacred.
14] Everything which is done in the present, affects the future by consequence, and the past by redemption.
